Batting question

What kind of batting are you planning to use? I'm not too sure what is best to use. I like what I have been using, but maybe there is something better out there...

I was thinking the same thing. I am using wool on a quilt I am making at the minute, and I normally use cotton (warm and natural). But then the lady that runs the quilting workshop I go to says she likes polyester because it's higher loft and looks good when you quilt further apart. So I am no help at all. Sorry!!!!

my quilt store lady says to use cotton if you're machine quilting and poly if you're handquilting. something about how the needle does best with certain types of batting.

I'm taking a Beginner Quilting class right now (great timing!) at my local Creative Sewing Center, and the instructor there told us to get Warm & Natural.

But, like Rebecca said, there is a lot of info out there on the internet about choosing your batting based on if you're machine or hand-quilting it, so that should be taken into account as well.

Perhaps we should be asking our swap partners if they want a lighter weight or heavier weight lap quilt? I'm guessing that someone living in Miami wouldn't want the same warmth that I would living in Minnesota. Just a thought...

Cotton for me too. I have only made a few quilts, but I think that ones with cotton just look and feel better. I like the way they drape - which I haven't gotten the others to do when using poly.

However, since we are making quilts for others I like the idea of checking in - especially if there are allergy concerns. Kind of takes some of the 'mystery' out of it, but might be a good idea. I don't want my partner receving something she won't use...

The ladies that run the shop I go to say that cotton is best for machine quilting. Whether that's true or not, it's all I've used on my quilts.
